Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal consumes six hundred thousand kilograms of meat in a day. This accounts to almost 200 million rupees in a day and 72 billion rupees in a year. Here, presented is only the data of Kathmandu valley. Wonder the amount of meat consumption in Nepal!

Among the most meat consuming country, USA tops the chart. Telegraph magazine states that a single individual in USA consumes 120 kilos of meat in a year. With this base, a Nepali might have consumed 10 kilos of meat.

There is one major concern of people in regards to choosing a meat shop in Kathmandu, most of the butchers cutting and selling the meat on the sideways of the road, Is the meat sold hygienic? Is it not contaminated with the pollution of the road?

Buffalo meat is the highest consumed meat in Kathmandu…

Inquiring with the Director of Animal and Livestock Regulatory Office, Dr. Balram Thapa says that 54.34% of the industry is occupied by buffalo meat in Kathmandu. The second is mutton, occupying 20.36% of the meat industry, 17.09% market is occupied by chicken, 7% market by pork and the rest 1% of the market stands for livestocks ducks, sheep and ostrich and other birds.

There is still opportunities for newcomers….

In derivative implications, we can simply understand that non-veg food items are highly demanded in the K-town. There is always a good market opportunity for the upcoming meat sellers. It is mainly because:-

-There is a net profit margin of 15% or more in the business.

-There is no great risk of loss, bankruptcy in case of starting a meat shop.

-Not everyone has the gut to chop meat and stay in the smell of dead animals for long hours.

Majority of the population in Kathmandu is non-vegetarian.

-There is no big brands established in market already. If you can brand and market yourself, there is always an immense opportunity.

-You can start up a meat shop with small budget as well.

-Most of the meat shops in Kathmandu are not being able to maintain hygiene. You can work out ways to serve clean meat.

-Most of the meat shops do you have appropriate heating and roosting machines. You can be the next competitive, technology updated one.

-The provision of efficient cold storage is less available in the marketplace.   

-Most of the meat shops have neglected the customer care and service portion of the industry. In most of the shops, there is no much space for customer to be seated.

-Most of the meat shops are running in a traditional manner. You can always add you the 21st century relevant touch-up to it.

Story of “K and K” meat shop…….

If a new comer could focus on hygiene, modern equipments, management and customer service issues there are better changes to market diversion. Such a profound example is “K and K” meat shop located in Bhaisepati, Lalitpur.

“K and K” meat shop was initially set up with an investment of 2.5 million rupees in 2017. With its qualitative product and ambiance, there is a profit over one hundred thousand rupees on monthly basis.

Traditionally, being a butcher is regarded as a separate profession to a caste of people in Nepal. Koshal Raj Regmi and Kadar Nath Bhattarai, two friends have proved this statement wrong to the still existing discriminative part of Nepali society.

Koshal and Kedar are equal 50-50% partners of the business. At recent times, there is a average sales of 60 to 70 kilos of meat in a day.

Once upon a time, even these two men were obliged to go abroad in search of employment and decent income. Today comes the time, when they are employing other people.
